27A Edinburgh Guide Company

Fridays, 6:25 - 8:30pm
For girls aged 10 and upwards

After starting the term in September with 15 new Guides   -   almost half of the Company!  -   the first few weeks were used to work on a Go-for-it called Teamwork, giving the six patrols a chance to settle in with their new PL’s and all get to know each other.
We have also spent time on activities relating to the Guide Promise and Law, planted hyacinths, made chocolate fudge in a poly bag, played games and sung songs. Guy Fawkes was remembered with a fire, sparklers, hot chocolate (with cream!) and melted marshmallows. 11 of the new Guides made their Promise that night. Two evenings have also been spent learning First Aid, using the Heart Start programme.
November always brings the Gang Show and this year we are going along to cheer for Lori, one of our new members. In December we will be having a visit from CricketScotland. Ask us afterwards what we did to learn about cricket, inside, in December!

27A Guide Company (a Memory)

How time flies! On reading your article in the September magazine about the
susceptibility of pirates to scurvy because of the lack of vitamin C, took me back years.
Our Guide Company went one Saturday afternoon to a nearby estate to experience and
learn a little about outdoor life. Each patrol had to gather sticks and light their own fire.
Eventually ours was lit (kind of!) amidst much laughter.

Then we took an orange, halved it, scooped it out and broke an egg into one half and, using the other half as a lid, placed it in the fire to cook. Unfortunately the rain came on and, not ‘Being Prepared’ we got
soaked. However the owners of the “Big House” immediately invited us in, and we were
shown into a large room with a lovely warming fire burning in the large fireplace.
While our wet clothes dried we enjoyed our sandwiches and biscuits.

It was a very long time ago, but I still remember it clearly; the owner of the estate was
Lord Baden Powell.
