17 November Dr Walter
Stephen Interesting Victorians
This talk, interesting indeed,
covered a number of Victorians, from
the familiar, like R L Stevenson,
to the unknown, e.g. the baker
from Thurso, whose interest
and fame lay in the field of geology,
and a Musselburgh golfer
who contributed a lot to knowledge of
the game. What they all
had in common was a connection with
Menton, a health resort
in the south of France, for health or work
reasons.
1 December Natalie Todman
An
Introduction to Bats
Natalie, an Historic Scotland
ranger in Holyrood Park, was a
lively and interesting young
speaker who, with film and paper
models, told us about some
of the myths and facts relating to
bats. There are about 1000
varieties world-wide, with varied sizes,
appearances, diets and pollination
functions. Their reputation is
better in the Far East than
in Europe, but by the end of her talk
our members felt differently
too!
After a most enjoyable Christmas
lunch at the Tusitala and a
holiday break meetings resumed
in January.
5 January John Rennie
Beniamino
Gigli
John, our old friend who
has treated us in the past to talks
and tapes about other famous
singers, did not disappoint when
speaking about Gigli, the
world-famous Italian tenor (1890-
1957). He was known mainly
for his work with the Metropolitan
Opera Company, but then
for tours all over the world including
Covent Garden and, in the
‘50’s, a visit to Glasgow. His life was
interesting, but our greatest
pleasure was just listening to the
glorious sound of his voice.
